Modulus Function
Modulus function is given as | n |
The modulus is the absolute number or the magnitude
E.g.
| 5 | = 5
and
| -5 | = 5
The modulus is the absolute number or the magnitude
E.g.
| 5 | = 5
and
| -5 | = 5
However:
-|5| = -5
-|5| = -5
Drawing Modulus Graphs
With y = |f(x)|
With y = f(|x|)
This means for every value of y only the positive x function is used. This creates a reflection in the y axis
This means for every value of y only the positive x function is used. This creates a reflection in the y axis
For example:
In the original graph when x = 2, y = 7 and when x = -2, y = -9
In the modulus graph when x = 2, y = 7 and when x = -2, y = 7 because it is |-2| = 2 so the function produces y = 7
In the original graph when x = 2, y = 7 and when x = -2, y = -9
